Cycling the Granite Way: A Highlight of Devon’s Festival of Walking
The YHA Festival of Walking is a national initiative celebrating the joy of walking and the outdoors, but this year, our event in Devon offered so much more.
The YHA Festival of Walking is a national initiative celebrating the joy of walking and the outdoors, but this year, our event in Devon offered so much more. Over 120 participants joined the Active Inclusion Network for a weekend of adventure, connection, and exploration, staying at the picturesque YHA Okehampton, thanks to generous funding from the YHA.
One of the standout moments was our cycling activation along the Granite Way, a stunning 20-mile route through Dartmoor’s breathtaking landscapes. The trail provided an unforgettable experience for many participants, some of whom were cycling for the first time in years.
The weekend was packed with activities: trail running through Dartmoor National Park, archery, axe throwing, and climbing back at the YHA. Groups explored Castle Drogo, while others cycled through the Devon countryside. In the evenings, the warmth of campfires brought everyone together, fostering friendships and shared moments of prayer. The event culminated on Sunday with a scenic hike in partnership with the National Trust at Watersmeet and Lynmouth, a fitting finale to a weekend full of connection and discovery.
One participant, Mariam, summed up the spirit of the event:
“Growing up, I felt isolated and didn’t have many Muslim friends. This event helped me see the joy of belonging to a Muslim community full of kind-hearted and adventurous people who love staying active and healthy. I am so grateful to Muslim Hikers for that.”
The success of this retreat has inspired us to return to Devon in 2025. Stay tuned for details and join us as we continue to create inclusive outdoor adventures for all.
